The EU perspective
Li Andersson, MEP, Chair of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee Li Andersson highlighted the need to adapt Europe’s social model to new economic realities. Rising costs of living, job insecurity, and energy poverty are pressing concerns for citizens. She stressed that Europe cannot compete by cutting wages but must instead invest in skills and innovation. While the EU has introduced measures like the Minimum Wage Directive, more action is needed. Andersson called for stronger public intervention, expanded social dialogue, and better regulation of AI in the workplace. In particular, workers must have the right to know how their data is used and to contest automated decisions. Addressing skills gaps will require urgent acceleration of adult training and vocational education.
