Welcome speech
Wednesday, March 5, 2025
1:40 PM - 1:50 PM
Mario Nava, Director-General, DG EMPL
Mario Nava opened the event by setting the broader policy context, highlighting key Commission initiatives such as the Union of Skills, the Automotive Package, and the Pact for Social Dialogue. He underlined that Europe's economic competitiveness and strong social rights are inseparable – two sides of the same coin.
With major demographic and skills challenges ahead, Nava stressed the urgent need for investment in people. The EU faces a shrinking workforce, a persistent digital skills gap, and slow progress towards training targets. To address these issues, he pointed to upcoming initiatives, including a new Action Plan for the European Pillar of Social Rights, a Quality Jobs Roadmap, and an Anti-Poverty Strategy. His message was clear: sustained investment in skills is crucial for Europe's future.
